A recent survey by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland examined a range of popular European fish oil capsules for the presence of dioxins.  Alarmingly, one of the products tested showed the dioxin level to be five times the maximum limit. Eskimo-3 stable fish oil was found to have the lowest levels of contaminants, which included dioxins and dioxin-like PCB’s.  Concentration of heavy metal contaminants such as cadmium and mercury was below detection levels in Eskimo-3.

Caution:

Not recommended for haemophiliacs.  Consult with a medical doctor if taking anti-coagulant medication, such as warfarin, coumarin or heparin.

Recommended intake: (back to top)

Capsules: 3 capsules, one to three times daily with meals, or as directed by practitioner
Liquid: One 5ml teaspoon with a meal, or as directed by practitioner.

After opening store in refrigerator and use within 2 months.

Please note: The liquid is the most cost effective way of taking the oil. It has NO fishy smell or aftertaste, and the pleasant tasting liquid form is often preferred by children who are frequently resistant to swallowing capsules and tablets.

Benefits and Features of Eskimo-3 Stable Fish Oil (back to top)

Swedish researchers observed that, although Eskimos consume large amounts of fat, they have a relatively low incidence of the diseases associated with high fat diets.

  • Eskimo-3 provides valuable doses of stable omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA, which are thought to be partly responsible for this phenomenon.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids help to maintain a healthy circulation, supple joints and healthy skin

  • Fish oils are required to help make anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (hormone-like chemicals)

Fish oil has proven beneficial to children and adults with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).

Ingredients (back to top)

Three capsules of Eskimo-3 typically contain:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids 500mg
of which EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) 240mg., DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) 160mg

  • Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 4.5mg, Encapsulated with: gelatin, glycerine, ascorbic acid, lecithin, and flavouring: lemon oil.

Eskimo-3 liquid: each 5ml typically contains:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids 1,500mg
    of which
    EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) 750mg
    DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) 500mg

  • Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 14mg
With ascorbic acid, lecithin, and flavouring: lemon oil.

More About Essential Fatty Acids (back to top)

Fatty acids are the basic structural units of lipids, which are dietary fats.  The body can synthesize many fatty acids, but those that cannot be manufactured in adequate amounts must be obtained from the diet.  These are called essential fatty acids (EFAs).

Fatty acids are classified as saturated, monosaturated or polyunsaturated – depending on the amount of hydrogen in the basic carbon chain of the molecule.

(The process of ‘hydrogenation’ – hydrogenated vegetable oil – involves adding hydrogen to the molecule to make a polyunsaturated, liquid oil, into a saturated, solid oil, such as margarine).

Many nutritionists and scientists report Americans consume too much omega-6 fatty acids and under-consume omega-3 fatty acids.  (The terms omega-3 and omega-6 refer to the location of the first double bond in the carbon atom of the fatty acid molecule.)  Including more omega-3-rich foods such as fish in the diet and decreasing the consumption of omega-6 foods such as some hydrogenated oils, may help maintain proper hormonal balance and overall health and wellness.

Essential fatty acids offer profound benefits.  They help:

  • Influence hormone production, immunity and cardiovascular health.

  • Maintain the structure and function of the cellular and sub-cellular membranes.

  • Regulate cholesterol transport, degradation and removal from the body.

  • Influence prostaglandins – hormone-like substances that promote smooth muscle contractions, regulate blood pressure, regulate gastric secretions, and impact other hormones – through a series of enzyme-dependent reactions.

  • Support normal growth, especially of blood vessels and nerves.

  • Keep skin and other tissue youthful and supple by lubricating abilities.

EFAs are most abundant in fish oils and unadulterated seed oils, such as canola, sunflower and safflower oils.  Flaxseed oil is an exceptional oil, containing both omega-3 and omega-6 in appreciable amounts.  Cold saltwater fatty fish – such as herring, haddock, cod, mackerel, and salmon – are also rich in omega-3 polyunsaturates and serve as the source of fish oil supplements.

The most important fatty acids are linoleic acid, linolenic acid, gamma linolenic acid (GLA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
